Korean cafes; we have seen them in our K-dramas especially when the leading characters need a place to meet up. Most of the time they just carry on with their conversations with delicious-looking drinks just sitting there on top of the table. It is also a place where we have seen our favourite stars having their first date and breaking up.

Did you know that South Korea’s coffee consumption represents about 6% of the total of Asia Pacific’s coffee market?

It is estimated there are about 49,000 cafes across South Korea and more than 18,000 of which are estimated to be in Seoul.

Additionally, some of these Korean coffee chains are establishing outlets outside of their home country especially in Southeast Asia.

And now, we can even see Korean cafe trending on the internet.

From the country that brought us ‘mukbang’ and ‘gongbang’, there is a new internet trend emerging from South Korea called ‘Cafe Vlog’.

These vlogs are filmed by baristas who document their lives behind the counters of Korean cafes.

For coffee lovers, these cafe vlogs are addictive to watch as these baristas work their magic preparing each and every drink as if it is a work of art.

Some of these cafe vloggers are not just talented in pouring coffee. Some are bakers baking pastries and cakes hours before the cafes are open.

Besildes showcasing baristas pouring beautiful latte art, these videos also show the people who work passionately so that their customers will enjoy their cafe experiences.

If you have never heard of this, here are 5 Korean cafe vloggers you should check out on YouTube:

1.Coffictures

This YouTube channel has gathered more than 96,900 subscribers since November 2018.

The channel covers not only cafe vlogs but various recipes of pretty-looking Korean cafe drinks.

These recipes include strawberry milk tea, Italian hot chocolate and cream mocha latte.

One of the recipes featured in his vlogs is strawberry latte.

Do not be fooled by its name; this strawberry latte contains zero caffeine.

It is one of the most popular drinks found in any Korean cafe and featured in many cafe vlogs.

For his cafe, Coffictures prepares his by cutting fresh strawberries into small pieces. Then he covers them in brown sugar. He then leaves them for about an hour until the sugar melts.

The next step is stirring the strawberry and sugar together. He finally packs them into bottles by pouring the strawberry mix and milk according to a one to one ratio.

2.Zoe

This Korean cafe vlogger only started her YouTube channel in April 2019 but since then has already garnered more than half a million subscribers.

In a way, these Korean cafe vloggers use their YouTube channels to promote their cafes. Zoe, for instance is working for her mother’s cafe at Pyeongtaek city in Gyeonggi province.

The highlight of her videos is parfait, a rich cold dessert made with whipped cream, eggs and fruit toppings. Her most popular video has at least 4.7 million views.

Zoe also collaborates with other Korean cafe vloggers such as Cafeslave Jun and AYA Coffee.

3.Cafeslave Jun

Speaking of Cafeslave Jun, this Korean cafe vlogger is followed by more than 352,000 subscribers.

He works in cafe named Good Simple Cafe located at Yeoju city in Gyeonggi province.

There are at least four of his videos which have surpassed 1 million views.

Since channels of people filming themselves living alone is a trend, Jun shares what he does cooking for himself at home.

Besides pouring pretty drinks as a barista, this vlogger also bakes and decorates the pretty baked goods served in the cafe.

In one of the videos, he shows how he prepares tarts, tiramisu, chocolate cakes and brownies.

You might not able to smell these desserts but looking at the effort going into them is enough to make you crave sweet food.

4.Aya Coffee

With more than 77,400 subscribers on its YouTube channel, AYA Coffee is a cafe located at Songpa district, Seoul.

According to their Q&A video, this Korean cafe specialises in latte art made from milk and coffee. So brace yourself for lots of amazing latte art in their videos.

The owner Lee Jong-hyeok explained he did not plan to open a cafe at first but was only planning to start a training centre.

In the end, he opened both a cafe and a training centre.

Their most famous video is a vlog of him making the signature caramel sauce used in the cafe.

5.Sagun Caffeine

Just like Cafeslave Jun, the vlogger behind Sagun Caffeine is also making desserts on tops of making caffeinated drinks.

Filming from Omelas Coffee in Incheon city, the channel has more than 54,500 subscribers.

The dessert that always pop ups in in Sagun Caffeine is dacquoise. It is a dessert cake made with layers of almond and hazelnut meringue and whipped cream or buttery biscuit base.

You can watch him making different flavours of dacquoise such as strawberry and caramel in his videos.

Looking at the way he works, one could tell he is very hands-on in his cafe. From making desserts from scratch, he is also constantly checking the quality of the coffee.

The advantages of making cafe vlogs

If you are a cafe owner/barista, producing your own cafe vlogs is a great way to earn extra income.

Depending on where you are located and the category of your channel, the earning from YouTube videos varies.

Most of these Korean cafe vloggers have Google Adsense advertisements embedded in their videos.

Of course other requirements is that the channel or content must adhere to YouTube guidelines.

As of February 2019, the requirements for YouTube monetisation are to have at least 1,000 subscribers and at least 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months.

Once you are able to make money of your YouTube channel, make sure that your videos are not victims to plagiarism.

Encourage your subscribers to watch and share your videos just like how these Korean cafe vloggers did. Even if the videos are embedded to other websites, only YouTube and video owners will earn revenue from ads on embedded videos; the site owner where the video (for instance KajoMag in this article) will not earn a share.

Sagun Caffeine once made a video disclosing how much he earned in for his cafe vlog.

Apart from that, starting a cafe vlog channel is a great way to market your cafe.

Many of the Korean cafe vloggers on YouTube mentioned in the videos whenever their subscribers came to visit their cafes.

The reach has gone so far that even non-Koreans have commented they would visit the vloggers’ cafes if they are in town.

With more than 3.55 million subscribers, Buzzfeed Unsolved Network gives viewers everything from the unsolved crimes, disappearances, conspiracy theories to supernatural incidents.

The best part of these videos especially on unsolved cases is that it presents all the possible theories of what might happen.

From famous unsolved cases such as the death of JonBenet Ramsey to lesser known cases such as the disappearance of Dorothy Arnold; Buzzfeed Unsolved Network has them all.

Speaking of Dorothy Arnold, she was an American socialite and heiress who disappeared under mysterious circumstances in New York in December 1910.

On that day, Arnold told her friend that she had planned to walk through Central Park before returning home. When she failed to return home for dinner, her family grew suspicious.

There are so many theories, alleged sightings and rumours surrounding her disappearance even decades after she was last seen. These theories include kidnapping, suicide and abortion gone wrong.

One of thing for sure, her fate remains unknown to this day.

2.Heavy Casefiles

This YouTube channel does not only cover cold cases but also latest unsolved murders and disappearances.

It also keep viewers updated with cold cases that were finally solved.

For instance, the murder suspect of two sisters who was finally identified 31 years later.

On March 5, 1984, Yleen and Lillie Kennedy were found found dead with gunshot wounds in Houston, US. Despite the extensive investigation, the authority was not able to identify any suspects.

In 2009, the DNA found on the crime scene was processed with latest technology but there were no matches found. Finally in 2015, the suspect Edmond Beauregard Degan was identified and subsequently charged with the double murder of the Kennedy sisters.

3.Merc

With more than 200,000 subscribers, Merc makes videos about mystery, true crime, horror, facts and short documentary videos.

The channel upload almost once a week. Its cold cases fall under ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ which now has at least 79 videos.

There are many unresolved cases out there being featured on this channel including Oklahoma Girld Scout murders.

Less than two months before the murders, a camp counselor discovered that her belongings had been ransacked and her doughnuts stolen at Camp Scott in Oklahoma, US.

Inside the empty doughnut box, there was a disturbing hand-written note vowing to murder three campers. The management of the camp thought it was just a prank.

Then on June 13, 1977, the bodies of three girl scouts between the ages of 8 and 10 were found 140m from their tent at the camp.

Evidence showed that they had been raped, bludgeoned and strangled. At first, the case was classified as solved when Gene Leroy Hart, a local jail escapee with a history of violence, was arrested.

However, he was acquitted when he stood trial for the crime so the murders still considered unsolved.

4.Cold Case Detectives

In October 2015, an American woman Ebby Steppah made an erratic phone call to her older brother, Trevor. Her brother described her as seeming “disoriented” during their conversation. Her last words to Trevor was “I’m f**ked up” then the phone call ended. This was the last know contact anyone had with her.

Days before her disappearance, she had accused four men of gang-raping her at a party she attended.

Two days after her disappearance, her abandoned car was discovered in a park.

Ebby remained a missing person for nearly three years before her body was discovered in a drainage pipe not far from where her car had initially had been found.

Authorities classified her death as a homicide. It is one of the unsolved cases featured on Cold Case Detective.

Created by TJ Ruesch and the team behind Top5s and DestinationDeclassified, the viewers can also send a request to research a specific cold case.

5.Criminally Listed

This Canadian-based YouTube channel is curated for fans of true crime. It aims to bring the most interesting true crime stories and unsolved cases that most viewers have never heard of before.

They have at least 29 videos dedicated to unsolved mysteries. They cover all kinds of topics such as unsolved mass murders, unsolved disappearances ad unsolved serial murders.

In addition to that, this channel also has playlists on serial killers, true crime stories and cannibals.

One of the unsolved cases featured on the channel is the Keddie Murders.

The murders took place in Cabin 28 of the Keddie Resort probably during the late evening of Apr 11, 1981.

Glenna Susan ‘Sue’ Sharp, her son John Steven Sharp, daughter Tina Lyn Sharp and John’s friend Dana Hall Wingate were all found dead.

Sue’s two younger sons Rick and Greg together with their friend Justin Smartt were also in the house but left unharmed.

There were multiple suspects over the years but to this day, no charges have been filed.

There are people out there who have posted their ordinary lives of living alone on YouTube. Some of these channels even have more than 2 million views.

Imagine millions of people watching you doing the things you usually do on a normal day, like making your bed, cooking for breakfast and preparing to go to work. Heck, some of these YouTubers have even filmed themselves cleaning up, but the effect is so cinematic!

Maybe because of the cinematographic work put into these videos, these real-life Home Alone channels are quite interesting to watch.

Some of these videos could even be mistaken for a short film or commercial video.

Most of them do not talk on their videos or even show their faces, relying on captions to tell their stories.

Some viewers commented these videos are ‘inspiring’, ‘calming’ and ‘therapeutic’. We could not agree more because watching other people waking up early to make breakfast really reminds ourselves how lazy we are.

The phrase sometimes used to describe these videos is “hygge”, a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfort as well as contentment.

Thanks to the internet, people are watching everything online. From watching people eating on camera (“mukbang”) to watching people studying on camera (“gongbang”).

Now, watching people living alone is also a thing.

As for filming oneself while living alone, there is a South Korean TV show showcasing celebrities living alone in their homes.

1.Tina’s Life

Racking up with more than 285,000 subscribers, this channel is run by a Japanese woman living alone in Tokyo. She welcomes her viewers to add in subtitles onto her video, so do not be surprised if you can see so many language options on her videos. Some of the languages are Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean and so on.

Her videos can be divided into two categories; her routine and Vlog. Most of her videos show how she prepares a meal for herself at home. The effort she puts on her food, even for simple snacks, is just inspiring, especially for those who always eat instant noodles when living alone.

The best part about Tina’s Life is that she even shows her mistakes on her channel. One time, she baked a cake but accidentally mistaking salt with sugar.

2.Ondo

There is not much to know about Ondo, except that she is a Korean woman. Apart from showing how she spent her time alone at home, she also filmed how she goes shopping alone.

Other videos include how she spent her hours after work and weekend with friends.

Ondo seems to enjoy entertaining so you can see in some of her videos how she prepares food when her friends come over.

That is the perk of living alone, you can invite your friends anytime you want and they do not have to tip-toe around your housemates or family members.

Basically, this YouTuber just show the people online her normal activities like cooking, decorating her home, doing bullet journals. By doing just that, she gathered more than 930,000 subscribers.

3.Sueddu

This Korean YouTuber filmed herself living alone with her dog Bebe while doing activities such as cooking and painting.

While her cute dog could have stolen the limelight from her, what is more impressive is the level of aesthetic of her videos. Combined with the soothing background music, her videos are almost addictive to watch.

Working as a freelancer means Sueddu spend a lot of times at home alone. According to her, her life as a freelancer and writer is a repetition of busyness and idleness.

She shared in one of her videos that it takes a lot to do everything alone including film herself, edit the videos and share them online. The things that a freelancer who lives alone can relate to.

4.Rhea Y.

Rhea Y. is originally from the Philippines but is living and working in Japan.

On her YouTube channel, she shows what happens in a day of her life, what she eats in a day while living alone and her minimalist lifestyle.

Though her contents are not as many as other homebody YouTubers, it is still fascinating to watch her living a simple life on her videos.

Her reactions while living alone are very honest like saying ‘O shit!’ when she accidentally screws up her cooking.

Understandably, most of these homebodies turned YouTubers did not reveal much about themselves. Since you are already telling the whole world that you are living alone, it’s not such a smart move to tell them about your identity.

For example, all we know about PlanD that she is a South Korean. She shows how she spends her weekends, preparing her meals and sewing.

Some of her videos do not have any English subtitles but she still managed to gather more than 97,000 subscribers.

Her video of how she spend a whole weekend by herself has more than 400,000 views. And when you thought spending time alone by yourself on weekend could be draggy!

Here is another aesthetic video of people living alone. Everything is so aesthetic about her videos; even when she filmed a Q&A video by answering subscribers’ questions using an old typewriter.

Nyangsoop admitted once that she does not know how to cook but continuously perfects her skills so that she can film herself cooking and baking.

And the highlight of her videos? Her cat who often make appearances in her YouTube channel.

As for the works behind her video, Nyangsoop shared that she uses tripod to film herself and then does the editing by herself.

She always come back from her work at night so she only films herself on weekend morning when the lighting is great. Then she spends the rest of the time editing the videos.

But let me warn you, her house already looks tidy and clean in the first place so it is not a home makeover kind of cleaning.

Overall, her channel is mainly made of Vlogs of her almost wordlessly going through her days of living alone.

1.When Li Ziqi made an entire cloak from wool

Viewers can watch the whole process of processing the wool, drying it , winding it with a spool, dyeing it and finally knitting the wool into a cloak.

According to the video description, she incorporated braiding into the knitting technique (meaning braid first and then knit) for everyone’s convenience.

Additionally, she said it was an easy and simple way for making clothing, blankets and scarves.

Perhaps Li Ziqi’s definition of ‘easy’ is completely different from the rest of us.

2.When she made one whole living room furniture set out of bamboo

This YouTuber never failed to surprise us with her life skills and in this video, she actually made one whole set of furniture from bamboo.

So where did she gets her bamboo from? She harvested them by herself, of course.

It is so impressive to watch her, from dragging all the bamboo, from the forest to sawing and putting everything together.

3.When she built her own oven like a badass

One of the perks of building your own oven is that you can shape it however you want. Here Li Ziqi decided to build her oven in the shape of a cute dog head.

Like all of her videos where she does not speak to the camera explaining to her audience what is she doing, in this video viewers are also left with lots of questions. For instance, what are the function of the glass bottles? Why mix the clay with the grass straw?

Here Li Ziqi introduces her viewers to sericulture or silk farming where she cultivates silkworms to produce silk. Did you know that silk was believed to have first been produced in China as early as the Neolithic Period?

We might not know how long it took for her to rear them, harvest the silk and then turn them into a comforter, pants and shirt for her grandma. But we do know that she needs to place the silkworms and mulberry leaves on trays, then put the silkworms on twig frames for them to form cocoons.

Once the cocoons are ready, she soaks them and winds the silk on spools. She then stretches them before sewing them into a comforter.

If you have not heard of Dianxi Xiaoge, then you have missed out on something really awesome on the Internet, especially if you’re a foodie!

One of the trends on YouTube is making videos of cooking traditional food in the most realistic, authentic way.

These YouTubers show you how they live their daily lives in the countryside, farming, harvesting, collecting plants in the jungle and cooking dishes using ingredients fresh off the farm.

Imagine if we had a Sarawakian who documented their lives at the longhouse, working on the farm, making burak (Kayan rice wine) and pounding on cassava leaves for dinner.

Interestingly, these videos have gathered a lot of subscribers and views on YouTube. Though Dianxi Xiaoge’s videos are loosely translated, non-Mandarin speakers can still understand the gist of this interesting show.

Here are five reasons why you should follow Dianxi Xiaoge on YouTube:

1.She introduces you to new dishes, particularly from Yunnan province

Dianxi Xiaoge prides herself on being a local Yunnan girl. She films seasonal ingredients, special local products and everything which reflects the uniqueness of Yunnan cuisine.

Yunnan is a province located in south-central China. It is known for its rich resources as well as being one of the most ethnically diverse provinces of China.

That being said, it is no surprise that Yunnan is home to a variety of unique dishes. Being proud of her roots, Dianxi Xiaoge shares plenty of Yunnan traditional dishes. Most of these dishes are unheard of especially in Malaysia.

One of Yunnan dishes which Dianxi Xiaoge introduced to her subscribers is the Zianyi Chilli Chicken. The dish has a history spanning over 100 years. It is cooked differently from the more famous Sichuan Chilli Chicken. The chili is first boiled before being pounded to cook with the chicken while Sichuan uses chili oil.

Another unique Yunan dishes are Bamboo Pipe Cakes. (Yes, it is exactly what you expect it to be.) It is a dessert made in bamboo. The snack is more popular in western Yunnan province.

Other Yunnan dishes featured on her channel are Pig’s head with Dried Daikon, Yunnan-style Grilled Lemongrass Pork Rib and Yunnan Red Bean and Ham Rice.

2.You will never take your food and farmers for granted after watching Dianxi Xiaoge

Besides cooking, Dianxi Xiaoge also shows the sweat and blood that goes into her farms. From pumpkin to soybean, she shares what she farms according to different seasons.

Not all of her ingredients are planted on her farms. She also harvests some crops from her relatives’ farm or picks them up straight from the jungle.

3.She makes you want to hug your grannies!

This YouTuber speaks fondly of her grandparents in her videos, especially her grandpa who works hard on the farm to make a living. So, some of the videos dedicated to her grandpa are those which she cooks his favourite dishes such as Brown Sugar Sweet Bean Curd Jelly.

Additionally, Dianxi Xiaoge inspires viewers to learn from the elders on traditional recipes and methods before it is too late. In some of her videos, she showcases how she learns how to cook certain recipes from her grandma.

4.Dianxi Xiaoge teaches you to make things from scratch

Speaking of grandparents, Dianxi Xiaoge also gets them to try food they had never eaten before such as hamburgers. Her grandparents had only seen hamburgers on TV.

She lives 20km away from the nearest town and even in town, they only sell traditional food.

So what Dianxi Xiaoge did was beyond amazing: She made hamburgers from scratch. Can you imagine whipping out tomato sauce from wild tomatoes?

Apart from that, she also educates her viewers on traditional cooking methods and it is her way of documenting this traditional knowledge.

While factory-processed sausages are common today, she shows how to make sausages the traditional way which she calls a genius idea from their ancestors which allows for long-term storage of meat.

5.She might turn you into home-based distiller or vintner

What makes Dianxi Xiaoge more impressive is that she is also a distiller and vintner. In one of the videos, she makes her grandfather’s favourite corn liquor.

Dinning’s “Videos for Cats To Watch” were the first videos I played for my child. They are not music videos at all, but videos of the wildlife – mostly birds – around this YouTuber’s home in Cornwall, England.

Shot in high-definition, watching the various birds coming to feed on the seeds Dinning left out is calming and pleasurable. Totally safe for children and the workplace too; you can even leave it on and just listen to it for background music as you do your paperwork.

OCB Relax Music

1. BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime

Buzzfeed Unsolved is one of BuzzFeedBlue’s weekly web series.

Its creator Ryan Bergara co-hosts the show together with Shane Madej where they highlight famous unsolved crimes throughout history and present possible theories.

Even though it’s heavy material, the duo manage to narrate it with some sense of humour, making the videos so entertaining to watch.

That being said, Bergara seems to have better chemistry with Madej who replaced his former co-host Brent Bennett.

2. Criminally Listed

Putting aside the dull narrations in the videos, Criminally Listed features great listicles of true crime stories.

The channel comes up with morbidly interesting themes like “3 Cases of Teachers Killing Their Students” and “3 Haunting Family Christmas Murders”.

The Canadian-based YouTube channel brings you true crime stories every Thursday and Sunday.

Revisit old crime scenes with the Vintage Files.
