‘Lets WAK The Funny’ to bring fresh faces and fresh laughs

‘Lets WAK The Funny’ to bring fresh faces and fresh laughs

‘Lets WAK The Funny’ to bring fresh faces and fresh laughs
Let’s WAK the Funny features (from left) Jhonney Athie, Niamh Spurr, Brian Tan, Brendan Goh, Hindravel and Juliana Heng.

KUCHING: One of the first comedy acts to kick off What About Kuching (WAK) 2019 is ‘Let’s WAK the Funny’ presented by I Laugh KL.

Featuring an all-inclusive and diverse cast of the freshest faces in Malaysian stand-up comedy, these funny people are ready to entertain by bringing their own unique brand of jokes to Kuching.

Brendan Goh is the debutante of this ball. This part actor, part comedian, part writer and all out mess just wants to entertain. His comedy is deeply personal yet witty and funny, but Brendan is not someone trying to be a star. He is a star waiting to be found.

The sassy Niamh Spurr, the group’s resident Irish lass, believes that she will feel right at home with the people of Sarawak, especially with the Ibans. Like the Irish, they both begin with I and they both love to drink. She is a woman at an age where she spends all her annual leaves attending weddings. There’s no doubt this female comedian will resonate with the hearts of all the women… and the men saving their money to buy rings.

Jhonney Athie is a Thai-Sabahan mix who is an expert in snail gender identification, Sabahan housing and development and most importantly, the Thai massage. This lower energy comic maybe a bit more subdued than everyone in this line up but he makes it up with killer punchlines that will make you roar with laughter and think more after.

Juliana Heng calls herself quirky and she is very much so. When you see her, you will see that she is short but as the ever-optimistic person that she is, she’ll say that she’s a person that’s just a little more down to earth. Openly a part of the autism spectrum, she knows how it is to be stigmatised but doesn’t let that deter her to stop being polite, start getting real and deliver punchy jokes.

The charming Hindravel is from Klang. Born from working class grit but has the charm of a man with a silver spoon, Hindravel brings the funny while being so relatable to any Malaysian. A staple in the Malaysian stand-up comedy scene, he has performed in English and Tamil at the Joke Factory.

Show headliner Brian Tan has the mind of an acerbic comedian and the face that mysteriously attracts every credit card seller in town. A seven-year veteran, Brian certainly knows how to bring the funny. Whether it is with Funny Business or 1MCB (1Malaysia Comedians Bureau), this funny and charming man has made people laughing out loud and yet somehow leave them inspired. His one-hour show, ‘Since 1982’ has opened to rave reviews in KL and this is all just the beginning.

Let’s WAK the Funny will be doing a total of three shows between September 27 and 28 at Old Courthouse Kuching. For tickets, Juliana at 018-2012986 or book your preferred show at Friday – https://stubapp.com/event/697 (Sept 27, 8.30pm), https://stubapp.com/event/699 (Saturday – Sept 28, 3pm) or https://stubapp.com/event/698 (Saturday – Sept 28 @ 8.30pm).

Tickets are at RM45 online or via phone booking, while it is RM 50 at the door.

This is a mature show intended for audiences over the age of 18.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view

Suasana on 18, just as the word ‘suasana’ (or ‘atmosphere’ in Malay) suggests, is all about the ambience.

Located on the 18th floor of the Riverside Majestic Hotel Astana Wing, Suasana on 18 is intimate, classy (there’ll be live jazz music as you eat) and you will get a floor-to-ceiling panoramic view of the Kuching Waterfront and the Sarawak River.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Enjoy the view of the Musical Fountain and the DUN Building lit up at night from Suasana on 18.

For those who may have been initially sceptical about the musical fountain (like I was), catching the light and water show in the evening as you enjoy your meal with a significant other, friends or even business partner, adds a certain magic to your fine dining experience.

With this relaxing and elegant backdrop in mind, just go all the way and order one of their two Western set meals; you won’t regret it. A modest 3-course meal – entrée, mains and dessert – you will get to pick and choose from two options for each course.

Revisiting the classics, with a twist

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Mibrasa Grilled Salmon with Miso Glaze.

The dishes for the most part are classic fine dining dishes, enhanced with a delicate balance between Eastern and Western flavours, as you will see in entrees like the Honey Soy Grilled Blue Mackerel and mains like the Mibrasa Grilled Salmon with Miso Glaze.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Honey Soy Grilled Blue Mackerel.

The blue mackerel appetizer will appeal to those with a Sarawakian palate as it is an upscale version of the home favourite – sardines in tomato sauce. The blue mackerel in this case, however, has a firm, silky texture and a delicate fishy aftertaste, enhanced by the combination of poached egg, tomato vinaigrette and a slight spiciness from the paprika. The crispy barbecued cracker is a great addition to this dish as it breaks up all of these soft textures and flavours.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Homemade Smoked Beef Pastrami.

For those who like a little more oomph in their entrée, they can pick the Homemade Smoked Beef Pastrami. With rolls of slow-smoked beef brisket resting on top of brioche toast and drizzles of mustard mayo, this elegant dish has the comfort food feel of a traditional sandwich. Definitely worth a try.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Pan-seared duck confit.

The Pan Seared Duck Confit (pronounced cone-FEE) was so tender and tantalising that it may win over people who don’t necessarily go for duck. The duck leg was moist, fall-off-the-bone, and had a beautifully thin, crispy crust.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Mibrasa Grilled Tenderloin Beef.

Another traditional fine-dining dish on the menu was the Mibrasa Grilled Tenderloin beef. Grilled delicately so that the juices are sealed inside, the beef was tender and flavourful, enhanced by the black pepper jus.

Like the other mains, this dish was served with a beautiful array of sides like pan-seared king oyster mushroom, potatoes praline, glazed French beans, and semi-dried cherry tomato flowers.

Have a sweet tooth?

Suasana on 18’s desserts were made for Instagram. Whether you choose the Chocolate Delice or the Vanilla Crème Brulee, both desserts are winners for the senses.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Vanilla Creme Brulee

Visually the crème brulee was striking and bold as it sat on a magenta streak of raspberry sorbet. One of the best dishes on the menu; the crème brulee was rich and creamy, a flavour tamed with the burnt sugar on top, begging you to savour it slowly.

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view
Chocolate delice with raspberry sorbet.

Another dessert to savour was the chocolate delice served with raspberry sorbet. Lovely to look at, the dark chocolate flavour and silky texture with the citrusy raspberry sorbet makes this dish luxurious and delightful to eat. Truly a great dessert to end your 3-course meal and enjoy with a coffee.

Planning a special occassion?

Suasana on 18: Fine dining with a view

The price range for these Western sets (RM120-RM150 nett per person) combined with the view from the 18th floor makes Suasana on 18 perfect for any special occassion or ice-breaker with a business client.

Open from 11am to 2pm, 6.30pm to 10.30pm except Mondays, call 082-532-222 ext 5006 to make a reservation.

Bon Appetit!

Writing retreat, talks on copyright law and contracts during WAK2019

Writing retreat, talks on copyright law and contracts during WAK2019
(Clockwise from top left) Lawyer and author Tina Isaacs, MYWriters president Gina Yap Lai Yoong and MYWriters Sarawak representative Georgette Tan.

KUCHING: Malaysian Writers Society (MYWriters) is bringing three events to this year’s What About Kuching (WAK) 2019, which also falls in conjunction with #MYWritersFest2019.

MYWritersFest, which began in 2015, is a month-long festival celebrating Malaysian writers and their writing.

The first of their three events include ‘Write Now, Kuching’, a four-day three-night writing retreat taking place from Oct 1 to 4 at Singgahsana Lodge, Kuching. This is one of the two writing retreats under #MYWritersFest2019, with the other one happening in Ipoh.

According to MYWriters president and retreat leader Gina Yap Lai Yoong, the idea is to take a few days off from normal routine and concentrate on your personal writing project.

“Writers are encouraged to work on their writing with minimal distraction from others. They can also communicate with other writers in the premises to discuss about their writings,” she said.

The daily group session, facilitated by Yap, is compulsory for every participant as it is to keep everyone accountable in their writing progress.

“You will get some leisure time but do not treat this as a cheap holiday. Our venue Singgahsana Lodge and its owners are offering us their venue because they believe in supporting the arts. So set your writing goals and expect to work hard,” she added, who will be assisted by MYWriters Sarawak representative Georgette Tan.

Yap has written 6 books and co-written many more. Her trilogy ‘Ngeri’ is a bestseller with more than 10 reprints since 2012. Known as a Story Doctor, Gina is a book consultant and has been mentoring writers since 2014 in their writing journey.

Retreat fees are RM210 per participant, which includes accommodations and meals. For more information, visit http://tiny.cc/kchretreat.

The other two events are talks by Tina Isaacs, a litigation lawyer specialising in copyright law. She is also a MYWriters committee member and a fiction writer. Taking place in the afternoon of Oct 5, Tina will cover an ‘Introduction to Copyright Law for Creatives’ and ‘Contract and Payment Terms for Freelance Creatives’.

Speaking on the talks, MYWriters Sarawak representative Georgette Tan said that while Kuching has no shortage of artistic talent, the lack of knowledge on matters of copyright and contracts often leave unwitting creative freelancers wide open for exploitation.

“As creative people, we usually don’t even think about matters of copyright or contracts until something happens to us. Alternately, we also don’t think about how our casual usage of other people’s intellectual property can hurt them,” Tan said, who is a former journalist.

In ‘Introduction to Copyright Law for Creatives’, participants will learn how to protect their work and control how it is used commercially while ensuring that they don’t infringe the work of others.

In ‘Contract and Payment Terms for Freelance Creatives’, Tina will walk participants through the legalese of contracts and how to protect their rights as an independent creative contractor.

Both these talks are not limited to writers. Tan added that these topics are relevant to all members of the creative community whether they are painters, dancers, photographers, designers, publishers, scriptwriters, or whether they make music, movies or handicrafts.

“With more and more Sarawakians embracing their artistic side as their primary or alternative income stream, it is worth understanding the legal side of the creative industry so you know where you stand and where you can go,” Tan said.

Ticket price for the talks is RM100 each. Attend both and pay only RM160. MYWriters members get 50% off the ticket price. Come in a group of five and pay RM400 (RM80/person) for one talk or RM700 (RM140/person) for both. To sign up, visit http://tiny.cc/kchtalks.

5 things you should know about Andaz Seoul Gangnam

Hyatt Hotels Corporation recently announced that Andaz Seoul Gangnam has opened in the heart of the South Korean capital.

Hence, this marked the Andaz brand’s entry into the country.

So, here are five things you should know about the newly opened Andaz Seoul Gangnam:
5 things you should know about Andaz Seoul Gangnam
Andaz Seoul Gangnam’s one king bed deluxe room.
1.Andaz Seoul Gangnam’s unique design

With direct access to Apgujeong metro station, Andaz Seoul Gangnam is designed to fuse traditional local culture and creative modern living.

The hotel concept’s inspiration is bojagi. It is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth used in significant ceremonies. Besides, according to traditional Korean folklore, it is a gift wrap to preserve good luck.

As for the brain behind the design, internationally renowned Dutch design firm Studio Piet Boon designed Andaz Seoul Gangnam. As guests move through the hotel’s light-filled interiors, unique layouts unfold to reveal unconventional corners and dynamic architectural angles that are layered with contemporary bojagi patterns cloaked in soothing muted shades and subtle textures.

All of the artworks in the hotel is created by artists either from Seoul or with a strong connection to the city. With this, the hotel will actively nurture local talent, offering a platform for emerging young artists.

Greeting guests at the entrance is Wish. It is an 8-foot-high (2.5 meter) bronze abstract of a mother with overlapping hands by Choi Jong-tae, a notable Korean contemporary artist.

While checking in, guests can admire Dialogue. It is an oil painting of frantic brushstrokes in cobalt blue by Oh Su-fan, who combines eastern calligraphy with western abstraction.

In A’+Z bar, there is an artwork by Lee Jung-woong called Brush. It is a strikingly hyper-realistic depiction of a Chinese calligraphy brush on Korean rice paper by Lee Jung-woong.

2.Guestrooms with spectacular view of Seoul

Andaz Seoul Gangnam houses 241 contemporary and stylish guestrooms. Plus, all of them are offering a bird’s-eye view of the bustling downtown district through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The striking diagonal walls inspired by the asymmetric angles of bojagi patchwork complement the fluid layout and clean-lined furniture which provide a floating illusion.

Guests looking to entertain may opt for one of two rooftop ‘hospitality suites’. These suites are spanning the entire seventeenth floor with private outdoor terraces overlooking Han River and the city.

As for the ultimate indulgence, the 1,755 square-foot (163-square-meter) Gangnam Penthouse Suite houses a vast entertainment terrace, a multifunctional living space with a bar and dining area.

Additionally, it can accommodate up to 20 people, a TV den with a theatre AV system.

The highlight must be its luxurious bathroom with a circular tub from which one can soak in the city views.

3.Well-assorted choices for drinking and dining

The hotel’s bars and restaurants are led by Executive Chef Hamish Neale and Sora Choi. She is the youngest Hyatt food and beverage director in Korea.

On Level 1, A’+Z serves as an all-day bar. This is where guests and passersby can drop in throughout the day.

Furthermore, freshly prepared savories, cakes and pastries are available for guests to either grab ‘n’ go or enjoy at the communal table or bar counter.

Then ascending the central staircase guests arrive at JOGAKBO, which means ‘traditional patchwork’ in Korean.

Here, it offers a sophisticated reinterpretation of Seoul’s immersive street and alleyway dining.

4.Rejuvenating wellness facilities

The Summer House features a 16-meter pool surrounded by a whirlpool and cold and warm baths, cabana-style niches and a seven meter LED screen showing immersive scenes of Seoul.

Guests can also relax in the infrared sauna, herbal bath, cool, warm and hot baths, marble-clad wet and dry saunas and ice fountains.

In the meantime, the spa offers only cutting-edge treatments. They are using products from premium K-beauty brand AmorePacific as well as Ling New York by facialist Ling Chan.

The 24-hour Fitness Center comes with the latest Life Fitness and Pilates equipment for energizing workouts.

Additionally, there is the Juice Bar serving fresh pressed drinks for patrons.

5. Andaz Seoul Gangnam’s collaborations with Korean brands

Andaz Seoul Gangnam has collaborated with several Korean brands to create an authentic local lifestyle experience for guests.

The art-inspired perfume brand Tamburins developed a signature fragrance for the hotel’s public areas. The brand is inspired by the nostalgic scent of mugwort rice cakes wrapped in bojagi, as well as an exquisite blend of amber, pine needles and sweet wormwood.

Meanwhile, local brand Hohodang will host a series of exclusive Andaz Salon events on bojagi wrapping.

Gayana Marine Resort lends a hand in ghost net underwater cleanup

KOTA KINABALU—Following the discovery of ghost nets in the surrounding waters of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP), the Dive and Recreation team of Gayana Marine Resort has also made it its mission to conduct underwater cleanups within its vicinity in Malohom Bay.

During their first ocean cleanup activity, the Gayana Marine Resort team has managed to remove a relatively new ghost net from a dive site in Sepanggar Island. During the initiative, the team has managed to rescue a trapped bamboo shark that was fortunate to still be alive. However, another bamboo shark also found trapped under the ghost net was not as fortunate.

“Initially, the purpose of our dive was only to search of new dive sites to bring our guests to. During our recce, we were shocked to have found patches of corals covered by nets,” said Gayana Marine Resort’s Operations Manager, Alfonso Valirianus.

Alfonso added that it was sad to see, otherwise, beautiful and healthy coral reefs being damaged and broken by the weight of the abandoned fishnets. Therefore, some of the living coral fragments entangled in the ghost net, were brought back to the resort’s Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC) to be replanted.

In its efforts to promote ocean conservation and awareness to the public, Gayana Marine Resort has established the MERC facility in 2007, where the resort’s visitors are given an educational tour, with a video presentation of what is happening in and around Gaya Island and what they can do to make a difference. MERC also invites its visitors to take part in conservation programs, such as coral replanting and adoption, as well as seagrass planting initiative.

In the future, Gayana Marine Resort is also looking into introducing underwater cleanup initiatives to expose resort’s guests more on the effects of unsustainable fishing and uncontrolled usage of single-use plastic items. This package is also targeted towards corporate bodies who are interested to do their corporate and social responsibility (CSR) programme under the MERC facility.

“At the resort, we always strive to inform guests that fishing and wildlife hunting are illegal within the protected Sabah Parks,” says MERC Ambassador, Lizio Mosigil.

“We constantly get questions from new guests whether they can catch their own fish and get them cooked for dinner. But instead of just saying “no”, we take them to our MERC facility and let them see for themselves why we are so passionate about conserving our marine lives,” Lizio added.

In late July, a group of divers successfully fished out 72kg of ghost nets during an underwater cleanup effort targeted at removing unwanted fishnets from the protected Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Sabah Parks has also launched a scuba diving club, called the ‘Sparks Divers Club’ as an initiative to conserve marine life and coral reefs in all protected marine parks. As a resort facility that thrives on the beauty of the ocean, Gayana Marine Resort gears up on its own initiative as a nod of support for Sabah Parks’ initiative.

Known for their ritual of swimming up to the shore almost daily, as many as five wild Bottlenose dolphins will visit the beach, making this spot a popular dolphin watching destination.

While the exact timing of these dolphin experiences depends on, well, the dolphins, there are feeding sessions between 7.45am and 12.00noon with a few lucky onlookers getting the chance to hand feed the dolphins. However, they are also known to visit the beach outside these times to forage and socialise. For your safety, and the dolphins’, do remember to not approach them too closely and refrain from touching them without the supervision of the specially trained rangers.

You can also come face-to-fin with the gentle giant itself, the majestic whale shark. Take some time to explore the outer reef on a kayak, dive charter or even a snorkel tour and go on an exciting journey to discover humpback whales, turtles, and manta rays, which is sure to be a sight to behold. With plenty of beachfront stays to choose from, you’ll truly enjoy being just a few steps away from the sparkling waters for a quick dip in the waters or a snorkelling adventure.

Where to find Thai designers in Chiang Mai and Bangkok

Thailand has talents as proven by numerous occasions when young Thai designers have been recognised on the local and global stages.

For over a decade, the government has been very supportive with various institutions and initiatives aimed at fostering local talents.

Government’s support for Thai designers

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has been very supportive of Thai design, old and new. They did this especially through ongoing exhibitions and workshops at its travel trade fairs and international road shows as well as familiarisation trips.

Among the best examples was at a Thailand Travel Mart in Chiang Mai. This is where superbly designed and elegantly crafted products and contemporary arts and crafts were a major hit among buyers.

Other government agencies; such as, the Ministry of Commerce recognises the creativity of Thai designers through its annual Design Excellence Award.

Another government initiative is the OTOP label (OTOP represents the One Tambon (District) One Product project) created 20 years ago. It has been helping to identify and promote iconic products synonymous with each of the 77 provinces.

Many OTOP products have earned global recognition and are sought after by both foreign dealers and visiting tourists.

“Thai design is in many aspects very different from the way other countries; such as, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan develop their design industry. During the Asian financial crisis 20 years ago, the finance and banking sector saw the needs to convert back to the basics by looking at the way of life. So Thai design is born from emotion, from craft made with heart rather than for mass production. This is what people see today when they think about Thai design,” said Eggarat Wongcharit, a designer and long-term curator of the Thailand Pavilion at the Milan Design Week, the largest event about design in the world.

Thai designers and artists

Thailand designer’s scene is today very lively covering various fields including fashion, home design, jewels, architecture and visual arts. Fashion brands; such as, Greyhound, Kloset, Gin & Milk, Pomelo, Senada or Tube Gallery.

In Thailand, designers and artists are found up and down the country. However, there are two major centres for talents.

Bangkok is the most important ‘talent fabric’. The capital offers the most opportunities with its universities, the presence of national and international corporations, and the possibility to get a job.

Meanwhile, Chiang Mai is regarded as a centre for young designers. It is backed by a centuries-long tradition of arts and crafts that has been adapted to the taste of modern consumers.

Chiang Mai, home of traditional and contemporary Thai design

Many experts in design will say that most of Bangkok creativit came from talents’ hatching in Chiang Mai or Northern Thailand in general.

Beyond the Night Bazaar, visitors to Chiang Mai will find designer shops settled in 100-year teak houses along Charoen Rat Road. It is an old street running parallel to the Ping River.

The Nimmanhaemin Road Night Market is also turning these days into a new hot spot for hipsters and design fans to admire the latest ideas of local craftsmen.

There are design shops everywhere in Chiang Mai with many brands now leading in their field.

Angsa Jewellery is one of Chiang Mai finest makers of filigree jewellery. It is the second generation of designers who perpetuate a tradition adding a contemporary touch with delicate jewels all made in pure gold and silver.

The Craft de Quarr shop boasts exquisite contemporary crafts from hill tribes, while Krit Boutique has a fashion line inspired by Lanna traditions.

Every year in December, the Chiang Mai Design Week celebrates its local design scene.

Designers, craftspeople and creative entrepreneurs showcase their new projects and innovations in design to cater to the needs of modern living.

Emerging Isan design

An emerging area for Thai design is in the Northeast (Isan). It is a place where local wisdom translates into the use of agricultural products; such as, bamboo or rice shoots to create elegant objects.

Silk or cotton weaving has also been part of the local culture and way of life in this region of Thailand for centuries.

At the forefront is the T-Style or Thai style under the concept of ‘Isan object’. Thailand Office of Innovation and Value Creation, Department of International Trade Promotion, Ministry of Commerce spearheaded this project.

Under the project, three renowned Thai designers have travelled across Isan. There, they meet the locals and help them translate local wisdom into lifestyle products as well as fashion items and ornaments for the international market.

They are M.L. Pawinee (Sukhaswasdi) Santisiri, Pichitra Boonyarataphan and Pirada Senivongse Na Ayudhya of the brands Ayodhya, Atelier Pichita and Trimode, respectively.

Many of these ‘Isan objects’ are available in Bangkok’s premium department stores.

Bangkok, the capital of Thai talent

Thailand’s capital is indeed where visitors will find the largest choice of design objects coming from all over the country.

Some of Bangkok’s malls generally dedicate a large section to Thai crafts, design and fashion.

Every year in December, the Chiang Mai Design Week celebrates its local design scene.

Designers, craftspeople and creative entrepreneurs showcase their new projects and innovations in design to cater to the needs of modern living.

Top of the list is Siam Centre and Siam Discovery. Siam Centre was renovated a couple of years ago with a focus on design.

All the shops are bearing a specific funky trendy style with the second and third floor concentrating most on local designers.

In Siam Discovery, ODS (Objects of Desire) boasts the best of Thai design spread across the fourth floor.

The fifth floor also offers a wide range of design objects linked to organic production. ODS recently opened an outlet at the brand new ICONSIAM shopping complex.

Also dedicated to Thai designers, THAITHAI @ZEN at CentralWorld features Thai fashion on the second floor of the Zen Department Store.

Alternatively, and a cheaper option, is Terminal 21mall at the BTS Asok station. There it has a wide choice of products by young Thai designers, ranging from funky T-shirts to innovative design objects. It is definitely difficult to resist!
