From Perth, enjoy a four-hour scenic drive while admiring the wide vistas of wheat and canola fields to the Wheatbelt town of Hyden.

Over 2,700 million years in the making, Wave Rock rises 15 metres above the outback plain. Interestingly, one of Australia’s biggest waves that is located the furthest away from any ocean.

This 110-metre long multi-coloured granite cliff is shaped remarkably like a huge wave that is about to crash. Thus, making it a popular photo spot among tourists.

Pose on the rock face and “surf” the giant wave. Or see it from a different perspective by walking along the trails around the base and over the top.

Located just under five hours away from Wave rock, Lucky Bay is the jewel among the string of spectacular beaches along the coast of Cape Le Grand National Park.

The lake is situated at a remote location 11 km away from the coast of Cape Arid National Park. It is accessible via charter plane or boat.

The breath-taking panorama of the contrasting deep blue ocean next to the bubblegum-pink colour of Lake Hillier is separated solely by a thin strip of sand.

Once you’re back on land, take a drive to Fitzgerald National Park. There, take in its pristine wilderness in all its glory.

Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the park is the largest single national park in Western Australia. It is perfect for nature lovers and adventure-seekers.

Being one of the most diverse botanical regions on Earth, the park is home to about 1,800 species of flowering plants. These species include Royal Hakea, Qualup Bell, Sepulcralis, Weeping Gum, Pincushion Hakea, Woolly Banksia, and Bottlebrush.

The surreal landscape offers a stunning exhibition of 51 metal statuettes scattered along the expanse of the shimmering salt lake.

Furthermore, the vast 10 square kilometre land makes it geographically ideal to spend a night bush camping.

Be sure to walk and explore across the exhibition site to view the different sculptures.

Plan your visit between the cool months of May until October. This is when the lake surface is sturdier, making it much easier to explore the exhibition site.

There’s no doubt that the Melbourne city center has a lot to offer, but by nightfall, seek new attractions elsewhere. Make your way to the unassuming town of Flinders, a 90-minute drive away from the city.

Located on the southern coast of the Mornington Peninsula, the beaches of Flinders offer an uninterrupted view of the night sky and its magnificent lights. With an absence of noisy tourist crowds or sounds of the city, you can marvel at the other-worldly Southern Lights in complete serenity and peace.

To meet with these friendly locals, head to the Dolphin Discovery Centre, where you can learn all about dolphins and other local marine life.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, then try heading to the shores of Koombana Bay, which has a dedicated interpretive centre and interaction zone that lets visitors get up close with the bottlenose dolphins that frequent its calm waters. Alternatively, if you want to swim with the dolphins, join a tour for a viewing and swimming activities for a completely out-of-this-world experience!

From bushwalking to white water rafting to four-wheel driving on the beach, there’s something for nature lovers of all ages.

The real beauty of Walpole lies when you take a gentle 600 metre stroll through the canopy of 400-year-old tingle tress on The Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park. Von Jolly Couture, Paul Carling and Erwan Asbor celebrated the feminine body with their elegant, form-fitting gowns. True to the fashion house’s style, Von Jolly Couture combined traditional motifs in their contemporary, head-turning gowns while Paul Carling’s designs celebrated the female form with its form flattering gowns and sexy slits. Erwan Asbor’s collection created drama and flair with its form-fitting, mermaid gowns.

To be held from March 7-9 at the old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building in Kuching, 24 designers and brands will be taking part in this event which aims to highlight the many colours of Sarawak’s cultures and diversities into the streamline of the fashion industry, applying the subject matter of lifestyle while emphasizing fashion as its core.

“We are honoured to have the opportunity to organize the inaugural fashion and lifestyle event of ALTA MODA SARAWAK 2019. This marks the first time an event of this kind will be held at the old DUN, an iconic landmark in Kuching.

“Our long term mission and vision are to hold the event on an annual basis as part of Sarawak Tourism calendar with Sarawak Tourism Board as the main supporter and partner,” stated AMS chairman Datin Esther Mujan Balan, who with Dato’ Raymond Valentine Jolly make up the AMS organizing committee.

‘Alta moda’ originates from the Italian language which means ‘high fashion’ where all the potential and leading couturiers, designers and labels will be looking forward to gathering under one roof similar to the likes of red carpet events featuring Hollywood A-listers.

In this spirit, AMS aims to serve as a brand platform for Sarawak designers to come together to showcase their talents and creations in the field of arts, culture and crafts as well as celebrate Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups and cultures.

“We, therefore, see our role as one of the catalysts and key players in assisting in generating the traffic flow of tourists to Sarawak under the Sarawak Tourism umbrella. We are also excited to be holding this event in conjunction with Visit Sarawak Campaign with support and partnership from the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak and Sarawak Tourism Board,” she said.

Another objective of the event is to provide up and rising Sarawakian designers the opportunity to make their mark in their own country rather than having to go abroad to make a name for themselves. It also aims to give local fashion followers the chance to have “high fashion at their doorstep.”

This year, AMS is confident that with the experience and background of the team of strong and dynamic professionals under this platform, Sarawak designers will be able to establish themselves as the fashion brand to be reckoned with and to enable the expansion of the Sarawak designers industry.

“We are determined and focused for ALTA MODA SARAWAK to be a successful yearly event to promote Sarawak as a leading fashion hub in Southeast Asia and attract potential tourism and merchandise buyers domestically and internationally for our Sarawakian designers and artists.

“Along with the teamwork support from various collaborating partners, AMS aims to work together with promising young designers, established designers and the Sarawakian designers association to make this a reality.”

AMS is hopeful through the support towards ALTA MODA SARAWAK 2019, this will be the next great Sarawak event to be reckoned with whilst promoting the region’s large multi-ethnic and multi-cultures and to provide a unique experience and enjoyment for tourists to look forward to and to continue to boost the sustainable future of Sarawak’s tourism.

The 3-day event is expected to be attended by the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg; Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib, wife of the Governor of Sarawak.

Snapshots of the old Rumah Dayak in Kuching

It was said that the original Rumah Dayak was going to be rebuilt as a bigger, better commercial project in 1996. Since it was demolished the following year, however, construction has been lagging and changing developers for the better part of 20 years.

Here’s a brief snapshot of what it was like hanging out at Rumah Dayak in it’s heyday.

Rumah Dayak at Jalan Satok was once a proud symbol of unity for the Dayak people. For those who have memories of the building, they would understand that it served more than just a function venue but a center of cohesiveness that brought the people together regardless of their backgrounds.

Opened by Sarawak’s second Chief Minister Dato Sri Penghulu Tawi Sli on 26 December 1969, Sarawak Dayak National Union’s Rumah Dayak was once a lively and vibrant gathering place for the Dayak communities before it was demolished in 1997.

Back then the double-storey, semi concrete wooden community centre was where people would come together for discussions and for any kind of celebration. It was also a learning center for people to learn and share traditional customs such as ngajat, bebiau and bejampi.

Rumah Dayak held such a place of prominence among the Dayak community at the time that it was also used for state level Gawai Dayak celebrations held every year on June 1-2.

Besides an events venue, it also served as a resting and lodging house for rural Dayak people who had to travel to Kuching for official matters.

After office hours, the place was usually packed with people who stopped by to meet their friends or to play sports as it had a badminton hall as well as billiards and ping pong.

It was such a popular hangout spot that even the likes of Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan, Tun Abang Haji Openg, and former deputy chief ministers Dato Daniel Tajem and Datuk Amar Dunstan Endawie Enchana used to go there.

The current scenario for Rumah Dayak

During the 34th SDNU Triennial General Assembly at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) in May 2015, Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom who also served as the president of Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) announced that the SDNU Supreme Council had agreed to transform Rumah Dayak into a budget hotel.

Currently, SDNU is still waiting for the Land and Survey Department to approve the revised plans before the Kuching City North Commission can issue an occupation permit (OP) for the completed structure on Jalan Satok.

Although Rumah Dayak on Jalan Satok may remain plagued by red tape, hopefully SDNU Sibu’s plans to have its own Rumah Dayak as promised by the Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in May this year during the union’s Pre Gawai Dayak Dinner won’t suffer the same fate.

  4. A line-up of weekend workshops hosted by leading figures from the animation world primed to spark your creativity. Most studies and guidelines prohibit babies from 0-2 years of age from having any screen time, and 2-5 year olds 1 hour of screen time per 24 hours with an emphasis on good quality entertainment and supervision.

1. Super Simple Songs

Super Simple Songs is the easiest children’s channel to get into. Its songs are tuneful and catchy while its animation and live puppet sequences are attractive and easy for your children to follow. Even parents will find themselves waking up in the morning to these songs playing in their heads.

This educational Youtube channel features nursery rhymes, teaches ABCs and numbers, colours and shapes, singing games, personal hygiene, basic social skills and original songs.

This channel features both 2D and 3D animations.

While its 2D animations feature mostly nursery rhymes and educational songs on colours, shapes and even nutrition, their 3D videos build on this with a wider variety of themes which include social and emotional skills, family relationships and original songs.

3. Dave and Ava – Nursery Rhymes and Baby Songs

Follow Dave and Ava to their lush home on the farm as they act out various nursery rhymes, teach the alphabet and  numbers with the help of their parents and the various animal characters.

A totally Ukrainian product from its idea, plot, direction, team of 3D animators, composers, voice actors and financing, the 3D animation is so good you can even see the fur on Dave and Ava’s animal costumes.

While “Baby Shark Dance” remains this channel’s most viewed video (1 billion views!), its other videos are worth watching too.

Besides catchy dance and action numbers like “Penguin Dance”, your kids can learn about trucks and excavators in “Car Songs”, names of dinosaurs in “Dinosaurs A to Z”, the planets in “Planet Songs”, and how their body works in songs like “Digestion – Where does my food go?”.

This channel is ambitious and doesn’t shy away from long words or scientific concepts, so take your time and explore their playlists for something new to learn everyday.

This is another ambitious channel with plenty of nursery rhymes and educational material for children to sing and dance to.

This India-based production also builds on the classic nursery rhymes by injecting moral values in songs like “Jack and Jill” or “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. You can also consider this the Bollywood version of children’s songs as the dance moves and music have an upbeat South Asian flavour, making it even more addictive to follow.

You can follow Mia and her family along with various animal characters like Baa Baa the Sheep (who wears an astronaut suit) through the various nursery rhymes and educational songs.

Honourable mentions:

Paul Dinning

Dinning’s “Videos for Cats To Watch” were the first videos I played for my child. They are not music videos at all, but videos of the wildlife – mostly birds – around this YouTuber’s home in Cornwall, England.

Shot in high-definition, watching the various birds coming to feed on the seeds Dinning left out is calming and pleasurable. Totally safe for children and the workplace too; you can even leave it on and just listen to it for background music as you do your paperwork.

OCB Relax Music

Short for “One Conscious Breath”, OCB Relax Music offers a collection of relaxing music perfect for meditation, relaxation or just as soothing background music. Parents will feel especially uplifted with this channel’s special playlist for children.
