5 Korean dramas that were criticised for their product placements (PPL)

When it is done right, product placements or PPL in South Korean dramas don’t hurt the storyline.

However when it is not, PPLs can annoy and make viewers lose interest in the drama.

This type of marketing move is like salt in a dish for any Korean drama. If you put too much salt in your cooking, you will find it salty. At the same time, you shouldn’t completely get rid of the salt because you need that flavour and sodium for your health.

The same thing goes for Korean dramas; a production company cannot produce a television series without the money coming in from product placements.

All the same, they cannot feature too many products in a drama that it feels like a 16-episode long advertisement.

With the rise in global popularity of Korean dramas, many companies are riding on the wave to promote their brands.

We are seeing more and more product placements from Subway sandwiches to Dyson vacuum in K-dramas nowadays compared to days of Winter Sonata.

And not all Korean drama fans are happy with this change.

So here are at least 5 Korean dramas that were criticised for its product placements (PPL):

1.Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016)

Widely known as Goblin among K-drama fans, this series follows Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) who is cursed to stay immortal forever.

Some of the products placed in the drama include Toreta Hydration Drink, Samsung Galaxy S7s, Baskin-Robbins, Kanu Coffee, Subway, Pure Love White Musk Perfume, Dal.Komm Coffee and Haru Yache Organic Daily Vegetables Yogurt.

The main reason the drama was slammed for its PPL is because it is just excessive.

The characters mainly drink only one beverage throughout the drama namely Toreta Hydration Drink.

When they go out to eat, they only go to Dal.Komm Coffee, Subway, Baskin-Robbins and BBQ Olive Chicken.

While the PPL scene in Goblin is deemed awkward and excessive, one cannot deny the power of advertising of the romantic fantasy drama.

It is that the estimated revenue for this drama is about 2 to 4 billion won (USD1.8 mil to USD3.6mil).

With increase in visitors at the various filming sites especially at Jumunjin Beach Breakwater, Gangneung city, Goblin is credited for boosting the local economy.

It also helped promote Korean author Kim In-yook whose poetry book The Physics of Love gained renewed attention after one of its verses was featured in the drama.

2.The King: Eternal Monarch (2020)

5 Korean dramas that were criticised for their product placements (PPL)

Written by the same scriptwriter as Goblin, Kim Eun-sook seemed to not know how to smoothly place PPL in her dramas especially The King: Eternal Monarch (2020).

It is understandable since it is a sci-fi drama which requires a lot of CGI, the series is backed up with estimated budget of 30 billion won (USD25.4 million).

To compensate that along with star-studded cast including Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun, The King: Eternal Monarch was heavily filled with advertisements.

Some of the products include food delivery app Yogiyo, bakery chain Paris Baguette, Georgia Coffee, BBQ Olive Chicken, Aston Martin, The Alley, jewellery line J.estina, Cheong Kwan Jang Red Ginseng Extract, Jongga Stir-fry Kimchi, Kahi Skincare, Cellreturn LED Mask, DParks Handphone Case and other sponsored items such as sunglasses and furniture.

It is not just the excessive product placements which stirred up the audience but also the cringey, unnecessary comments to promote these products in the middle on the storyline.

While the fans were unhappy, the companies behind these product placements were laughing their way to the bank.

BBQ Chicken for instance, reported the sale of 550,000 sets of its fried chicken in a month after its appearance on the series.

3.Memories of the Alhambra (2018)

A typical advertisement for beauty products is a scene of a woman getting ready for her work or a date.

Imagine this familiar scene but place it in a Korean drama then you have the reason why Memories of the Alhambra being critised.

After the main characters Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin) and Jung Hee-joo (Park Shin-hye) confirmed their feelings for each other, they both go out for a date.

Then, a series of product placements take place in the drama.

When getting ready for a date, Hee-joo start to use various items such as shampoo, hair essence, lipstick and earrings, which are all paid advertising items.

The scene in which Hee-joo putting on the hair essence is practically a hair tutorial of how to use RYO Hair Loss Care Essence.

Nonetheless, other product placements in the drama can be considered smoothly incorporated into the plot.

Since the series is about augmented reality game, some of the advertised products appeared as game items in the story.

For instance, players need to purchase a Subway sandwich to boost their characters’ ‘health’ in the game.

4.True Beauty (2020)

“Is this a Chinese drama?” This was some of the criticism over the product placement in the drama True Beauty (2020) after its seventh episode was aired.

In that particular episode, the main character Lim Joo-kyung (Moon Ga-young) enjoys an instant hot pot from Zihaiguo, a Chinese brand.

The scene was heavily criticised because it was a blatant product placement without making any sense to the plot.

A high school student buys a Chinese product from a convenience store but the brand is not even available in any convenience stores in South Korea.

With other Chinese brands popping up on billboards every now and then throughout the drama, many Korean viewers were not happy with the heavy promotions on foreign companies.

5.Vincenzo (2021)

5 Korean dramas that were criticised for their product placements (PPL)

Here is another Korean drama that came under fire for its product placements of Chinese products.

Just like the drama True Beauty, Vincenzo (2021) was under heat for featuring the brand Zhihaoguo but instead of instant hotpot, this time it was instant bibimbap.

Moreover, bibimbap is a Korean dish not a Chinese food.

The controversy even drew out Vincenzo’s lead actor Song Joong-ki to apologise for the scene.

On the other hand, Indonesian viewers were happy to see their home brand Kopiko seen in the drama.

It is estimated that it cost around 200 million won (RM740,000) to have your product being placed in A-list drama like Vincenzo.

“The Renaissance”: A fitting tribute for returning K-pop titans Super Junior

By Geryl Ogilvy

Super Junior’s latest album “The Renaissance”, released in March after several delays, could not have come at a better time as the K-pop legend celebrates its 15th anniversary.

The 10th full-length album also marked the first that all active members have returned to the group fondly known as SJ or SuJu, especially considering that all members had served South Korea’s mandatory military service.

In South Korea’s tough music environment, where the industry churns out new acts and idols each year, swallowing older groups and artistes, Super Junior has traversed genres, continuing to attract new fans across the globe, maintaining dominance and withstand many others in K-pop history.

No doubt Super Junior, consisting group leader Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun, the group’s “maknae”, are the industry’s veterans, yet they continue to reinvent themselves, appealing to new generation of fans.

They have also been dubbed by the media as the “King of Hallyu Wave” due to their prominent contribution in the Korean pop culture wave.

Renaissance, which means rebirth in French, a revival or renewed interest, is definitely a befitting choice to name their latest album to mark a new era and reintroduced the group to the global K-pop fandom.

The Renaissance

Despite all the hype for a new beginning, Super Junior actually kicked off the new album promo last year with the remake of “Raining Spell for Love” from its 2014 album “Mamacita”, following votes from its fandom, which Leeteuk coined as ELF or “Everlasting friends”.

The group also admitted “Raining Spell for Love”, originally an R&B pop track that expressed a man’s heart after a break up, as one of their favourite. The voting topped the list for the “Song I want SuJu to do a remake of”, beating other strong contenders of hits such as “U”, “Miracle” and “Devil” among others.

The group, debuted on Nov 6, 2005, also released another track “The Melody” on the date to celebrate their 15th anniversary last year.

In December, the group debuted its first monster hit from The Renaissance with the opera-like ballad “Burn the Floor” in a medley of songs performance in The Fact Music Awards, where Super Junior also took home Artist of the Year, Popularity Award, Fan & Star Most Votes, and Fan & Star Choice Award.

The boys then dropped an epic performance in the music video for “Burn the Floor” to give fans a glimpse and feel of their grand return. The song talks about their passionate admiration for their respective lovers and likened the relationship to the sensual dance performance portrayed in the music video.

On March 16, the K-pop legends released current global hit “House Party” to commemorate the official album launch which has been postponed twice.

The song, which talks about life coping with the Covid-19 pandemic in a time where physical contact was taken for granted, has resonated with the audience for its relatable lyrics, with lines like: “Everyone is connected without any physical contact”, or “Let’s put aside our feelings of wanting to be together for a while”, where Super Junior invites their fandom to a virtual “House Party” amid the new norm.

The disco-pop melody of House Party also earned Super Junior an applause from WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who gave his nod to the band for reminding those impatient with the prolonged pandemic to maintain caution.

“Super Junior, you’re on point there. Indeed, we still need to maintain precautionary measures against Covid-19 to protect each other and control this pandemic. Thank you for reminding us through your music,” he tweeted.

Super Junior’s The Renaissance features a total of 10 tracks including “Super”, “Paradox”, “Closer”, “Mystery”, “More Days with You” and “Tell Me Baby”.

Super Junior – from K-pop supergroup to legend status

It’s hard not to define Super Junior as the trailblazer of K-pop supergroup dominating the market today. At a time when most groups typically have five or less members, SuJu debuted with 12 members.

It is inevitable not to recognise the legendary status of Super Junior, which continues to stay relevant in the saturated K-pop market, especially in the past decade with the emergence of wildly popular groups such as Big Bang, EXO, Girls’ Generation, Monsta X and many others.

They are indeed the front runners, leading the way and opening paths to global stardom enjoyed by today’s generations of K-pop artistes, most notably BTS and Blackpink.

Throughout their 15-year career, the group has won many accolades and awards worldwide, topping charts in many countries including the famed Billboard charts on a couple occasion.

In the local front, Super Junior was the best selling K-pop artiste for four years in a row and has earned 13 awards from the prestigious Mnet Asian Music Awards, 19 from the Golden Disc Awards and won “Favourite Artist Korea” at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards.

In 2012, they were nominated for Best Asian Act in the MTV Europe Music Awards and won “International Artist” and “Best Fandom” at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards.

Super Junior started off with 12 members when their debut album, “Twins” was released. At the time, they were known as Super Junior 05.

Super Junior initially started as a rotational concept line-up, in which members would experience changes and replaced with new singers each year to keep the group young, fresh and all-rounded. However, the rotational concept was abandoned by SM Entertainment after adding Kyuhyun in the band in 2006. The group was renamed as Super Junior, without the suffix “05”.

When SM Entertainment started the boy band project, Han Geng was the first to be recruited in 2000 following an overseas casting in China. He auditioned against some 3,000 applicants.

That year, Leeteuk, Yesung and Eunhyuk were recruited after auditioning at the company’s annual casting system in Seoul. Sungmin and Donghae became trainees after jointly winning first place in an SM-sponsored contest in 2001, while Heechul and Kangin were recruited along with Kabim the following, where the latter was discovered in Los Angeles by a casting agent. Siwon became a trainee in 2003, followed by Shindong a year later. Ryeowook became a trainee after winning a singing competition just two months before the groups’ debut in 2005.

Han Geng left the group in 2011 following a contract dispute, while Kibum left in 2015 after his contract ended. Kangin left in 2019 and Sungmin has remained in hiatus since 2015.

Since their debut in 2005, Super Junior has produced 10 studio albums, two compilation albums, two EPs and numerous live recordings. So extravagant was their popularity, added with the boys’ talent in producing and writing their own music, members of Super Junior also have standalone releases through solo works or five subunits the group siphoned off at various points in their careers.

How “Sorry, Sorry” changed K-pop forever

https://twitter.com/SJofficial/status/1076991911825559553

Super Junior’s leap to global super stardom would come in 2009 with the release of their mega hit song “Sorry, Sorry”, which became the best-selling single of their career. “Sorry, Sorry”, which was also the name of the album, became the best selling album in South Korea for 2009 within a month after its release.

It also became the best-selling K-pop album in China, Taiwan, Thailand and The Philippines and with the album title track reaching number one in music charts at the respective country. “Sorry, Sorry” stayed number one for 10 consecutive weeks in South Korea and a record-breaking 37 weeks in Taiwan’s K-pop singles chart.

In terms of Hallyu history, many agreed that 2009 was an iconic year, an impactful era in terms of K-pop reaching global audiences. While PSY might have turned himself into a viral phenomenon in 2012 with the release of “Gangnam Style”, many argued that 2009 was the launch pad that made K-pop what it is today.

Nowadays, “Sorry, Sorry” is almost like a rite of passage for newer groups, where EXO, Seventeen, NCT and even BTS, Gfriend and Twice have covered the song.

The group’s follow-up album Bonamana, released in 2010, was top of the chart for 61 weeks in Taiwan.

The group also took part in SMTown Live ‘10 World Tour in Los Angeles, New York City, Paris and Tokyo along with other SM Entertainment artistes, performing outside Asia for the first time. Super Junior’s performances were well received by the media.

They were honoured as Korea’s National Pop Culture Icon for their role in spreading the Hallyu Wave. They were also featured in CNN’s Talk Asia programme, Mexico’s TV Azteca and even the BBC acknowledged Super Junior as the leading icon of the Hallyu effect.

Super Junior went on to receive various recognition worldwide, penetrating Europe, North and South America. The group was selected by Brazilian Hallyu fans as the number-one Korean music act they want to visit Brazil. A magazine in Peru even included all of the members in their top 30 ranked “The Sexiest Men in the World” list.

Super Junior’s global success continued with Mr. Simple (2011) and Sexy, Free & Single (2012). The group also successfully completed three Asia tours and a Super Show 4 world tour in 10 cities including Seoul, Osaka, Taipei, Singapore, Macau, Bangkok, Paris, Shanghai, Jakarta and Tokyo, gathering some 900,000 audiences.

Sexy, Free & Single ranked high on iTunes in several countries including Australia, France, Peru and Japan. It also ranked third on Billboard World Albums. Super Junior also embarked on another world tour, Super Show 5, covering Seoul, then China, Japan, South America, North America and Europe. The tour was also considered the largest K-pop tour in the South American market.

In 2014, Leeteuk and Heechul rejoined the group after serving the military for their seventh album Mamacita, which ranked number one on the Billboard World Albums chart. Super Junior embarked on another world tour and became the first K-pop group to perform 100 concerts worldwide.

In 2015, Yesung rejoined the group for a special album, Devil, which was released on July 16 and became the best-selling album for the week in the United World Charts. In November that year, Super Junior set up their own exclusive label management “Label SJ”, a collaboration with SM Entertainment for the members to manage and produced their own albums, group, subunits and individual activities.

The year also saw Eunhyuk, Donghae and Siwon enlisted in the military. The following year, Ryeowook began his military service followed by Kyuhyun in 2017.

In October 2017, Super Junior released the music video for their new single “One More Chance”, to mark the returning three members from their military service. The group announced the release of their eighth album, Play, on Nov 6 and released the music video Black Suit, as the lead single, which earned three million views in 24 hours.

The album was repackaged in 2018 and the music video of its lead single “Lo Siento” was released. The song, featuring American-born Hispanic singer Leslie Grace, debuted at number 13 on the Billboard Latin Digital Song Sales chart, making Super Junior the first K-pop artistes to be featured on this chart. “Lo Siento” also debuted at number two on the World Digital Song Sales chart.

Super Junior also released a special EP, One More Time, featuring Mexican band Reik. “One More Time” debuted at number 18 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart and number 5 at the Latin Pop Digital Song Sales chart, as well as debut at number 4 on the World Digital Song Sales chart.

Super Junior became the first Korean act to enter the Latin Billboard charts twice.

In 2019, Super Junior scored another first in the South Korean music industry by becoming the first K-pop artistes to hold a solo concert in Jeddah.

On May 31 last year, as part of their 15th anniversary celebration, the group headlined an online live event concert organised by SM Entertainment which played to an audience of about 123,000 around the globe. The concert was held following of the cancellation of several concerts and super shows due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Super Junior – Leeteuk (real name Park Jeong-su), Kim Heechul, Yesung (Kim Jong-woon), Shindong (Shin Dong-hee), Eunhyuk (Lee Hyuk-jae), Lee Donghae, Choi Siwon, Kim Ryeowook and Cho Kyuhyun – has definitely achieved an enviable status in K-pop.

5 female journalists that everyone should know about

Today, the journalism industry is tainted by the wild spread of fake news and the oppression against the media.

Plus, the digital age of information has not been entirely favourable towards journalism.

On the good side, news and information are easier and faster to dispense to the wider crowd.

At the same time, plagiarism and infringement of ideas take place faster and in a larger scale than we have ever imagined before.

While a good number of journalists are still taking pride in pursuing original stories, other so-called digital content creators are taking pleasure in rewording others’ articles.

Moreover, the online violence female journalists has increased ‘significantly’ according to UNESCO’s latest findings.

The UNESCO report carried out by the International Center for Journalists surveyed more than 900 female journalists from 125 countries. It found that nearly three-quarters of these female journalists had experienced online abuse.

The study also found that a quarter of those surveyed had been physically threatened. The reasons behind these threats include covering elections or conflicts, women’s rights or for reporting stories that identified as ‘male coverage’ such as sports. These reasons mostly are not the same reasons behind threats against male journalists.

Additionally, the contribution of female journalists have been always overshadowed by their male colleagues.

5 female journalists that everyone should know about

With that, let us remember these five female journalists whose writings have contributed to society and even influenced the course of history:

Indonesian journalist Soerastri Karma Trimurti (1912-2008) was also known as S. K. Trimuti.

She started her career as an elementary school teacher during the 1930s.

In 1936, the Dutch authorities arrested her for distributing anti-colonial leaflets.

Trimuti later was imprisoned for nine months at Bulu Prison in Semarang, Central Java.

Her arrest became a turning point in her life. Upon her release from prison, Trimurti quit her job as a teacher and became a journalist.

In order to avoid being arrested by the Dutch, Trimurti used different pseudonyms in her articles.

When World War II (WWII) broke out, the Japanese took control of her country.

During this time, Pesat, a newspaper she published together with her husband, was banned by the Japanese.

Unfortunately, Trimurti was also arrested and tortured by the Japanese.

After Indonesia achieved its independence, Trimurti ventured into politics.

She became Indonesia’s first Minister of Labour.

Today, there is a journalism award named after her called the SK Trimurti Award. The award is to recognise journalists’ efforts in fighting for gender equality in Indonesia.

2.Chit Estella

Today, Chit Estella is known for playing crucial part in the founding of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and of Vera Files.

These two are Philippines’ most prominent independent investigative journalism organisations.

Her work circled mostly on writing on government corruption and human rights violations.

At one point of her career, Estella was the editor in-chief of Pinoy Times. It was a Filipino tabloid that catalysed the ousting of Philippine President Joseph Estrada.

Sadly on May 13, 2011, the veteran journalist was killed after a bus slammed into the taxi that she was riding in Quezon City.

Her name is now among the 19 inscribed on the Monument of the Heroes Memorial Wall in Quezon City. The memorial is dedicated to those ‘who defied risks and dedicated their lives for the cause of truth, justice, peace and freedom of the Filipino people’ during Ferdinand Marcos’ regime.

This was in recognition of Estella’s early work as a journalist during the Martial Law period, a stunning 14-year period of one-man rule under Marcos spanning 1972 to 1986.

3.Daphne Caruana Galiza

This Maltese writer, journalist and blogger was a well-known figure for her works in investigative journalism.

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s reports focused on government corruption, organised crime, nepotism and money laundering.

Due to her writings, she was threatened and intimidated almost on adaily basis.

On Oct 16, 2017, a bomb which was placed in her car exploded, killing her immediately while she was driving.

As of November 2019, four men were arrested in connection of Galizia’s murder including Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech.

He was the owner of 17 Black Limited, a mysterious shell company Galizia had been looking into just before her untimely death.

In honour of Galizia, the European United Left-Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Award for Journalists, Whistleblowers & Defenders of the Right to Information was established in 2018.

4.Lin Zongsu

5 female journalists that everyone should know about

Lin Zongsu was born in Fujian Province in 1878, she was tutored by her mother at home as a child.

In 1902, she began her studies at the Patriotic Girls School of Shanghai.

As a student, she co-founded the first women student’s association called the Mutual Love Society.

The organisation published their views in the journal Jiangsu. It was through this journal Lin began her writing career, advocating for women’s rights.

After finishing her study, she started to work at her brother’s newspaper called the Chinese Vernacular News.

Lin also became an associate editor for the Daily Alarm. She wrote mostly about women’s rights during her career as a journalist.

In the end, both of the newspapers were forced to shut down in 1905.

After that, Lin went into politics, founding the Women’s Suffrage Comrades Alliance in 1911.

Her advocacy might be taken for granted today, but it was a significant move for women’s rights as Lin and other women in her organisation were fighting for women’s right to vote.

In 1913, democracy was suppressed under the Yuan Shikai regime in China.

Lin decided to leave the political world as well as China and moved to Singapore where she became teacher and ran a boating business. The money she earned was used to finance her brother’s newspaper in China.

After a decade in Singapore, Lin moved back to China where she passed away in 1944.

Today, she is remembered as one of China’s first female journalists and newspaper editors as well as a notable feminist activist.

5.Na Hye-sook

She was considered the first professional female painter and the first feminist writer in Korea.

Na Hye-sok published Korea’s first feminist short story, Kyonghui in 1918 at the age of 22.

It was about a woman who returns home to Korea from Japanese university to be confronted by people around her who do not believe in female education.

The short story resonated with Na’s life because at that time she was still studying at Tokyo Women’s College of Arts. She was taking a Bachelor of Arts in Western Painting, the first Korean woman to do so.

Na returned to Korea a year after she published Kyonghui.

Upon her return together with four other women, Na launched the first issue of Sinyoja or New Woman.

It was the first ever magazine for Korean women.

Na herself wrote several articles arguing about the practicality of Korean female dresses.

Japanese authority who ruled Korea at that time, shut down Sinyoja after only four issues.

The writer continued to write ‘controversial’ articles while juggling her career as a painter.

In the end, her article in the Samcheolli magazine in 1934 called ‘A Divorce Confession’ became Na’s most controversial write-up.

She openly talked about her sex life, pointing out that her former husband had not sexually satisfied her.

The painter also criticized male-dominance in Korean society in the article.

Her most eyebrow-raising statement was that she advocated domestic partnership before real marriage to take place.

After her article was published, the conservative Korean society was not having it. From then, nobody wanted to hire her to write, or buy her paintings.

Despite her wealthy upbringing, Na ended up living in poverty and spending her last years on charity.

She passed away alone on Dec 10, 1948 in a hospital. To this day, no one knows the location of her grave.

Her name became a phrase to reprimand young girls interested in literary or artistic aspirations as the scolding “Do you want to become another Na Hye-sok?” became widely used.

Thankfully, since then Na has been acknowledged in South Korea for her painting and writing with a retrospective featured at the Seoul Arts Centre in 2000. Even Google celebrated her 123rd birthday in 2019 with a doodle.

5 Korean libraries and bookstores from K-dramas to visit

Just because international traveling is impossible right now, doesn’t mean you cannot plan for the Covid-19 free future.

If you have been binging on Korean dramas during this pandemic, you might notice a commonly seen filming location is either the library or the bookstore.

Instead of a place for reading and to buy books, these libraries and bookstores are usually the meeting places for the characters. Sometimes, it is also a place for them to ‘accidentally’ bump into each other.

If South Korea is in your itinerary post Covid-19 pandemic, and you love reading, try to visit these five Korean libraries and bookstores.

Who knows? You can recreate the Korean drama scenes and capture them in photos for memories.

Here are five Korean libraries and bookstores from your favourite K-dramas that you might want to visit:

1.CGV Cine Library

This library is the shooting locations of Chicago Typewriter (2017), Black Knight (2017), You Drive Me Crazy! (2018), Are You Human? (2018), Find Me in Your Memory (2020) and Alice (2020).

In Korean drama-land, it is a place where press conferences take place such as Find Me in Your Memory and Chicago Typewriter.

Besides that, it is also a place to hold a talk such as in Black Knight (2017), this library was where Jang Baek-hee (Jang Mi-hee) gives her talk about her blog and in Are You Human? (2018) where scientist Oh Ro-ra (Kim Sung-ryoung) talks about artificial intelligence.

CGV Cine Library is the first cinema library and art house in South Korea. Located at Jung-gu, Seoul, it is known to have over 10,600 books on various movies.

2.Seoul Book Repository

The hotel in Korean drama Hotel del Luna (2019) is nothing like your normal hotel. It is where all dead people coming to terms with their unfinished business in their former lives.

One of them was a ghost who wanted to read all the books in the world. Surrounded with books, the ghost who seem to enjoy reading.

This particular scene is shot at Seoul Book Repository, the city’s first public secondhand bookstore.

The building is in fact an old warehouse that was used previously for storing Amway’s products.

There are about 120,000 secondhand books in the 1400 square-meter store. All the books are supplied by 25 secondhand bookstores from around Seoul city.

While in the drama the place is a place of refuge for the afterlife, in the real world Seoul Book Repository aims to provide small secondhand bookstores with an effective sales platform.

3.Uijeongbu Art Library

Do you know that there are different kinds of specialised libraries in South Korea? The Soriul Library for example, is specialised in musical instruments. Located in Osan city, the library has 20,000 books and 180 kinds of musical instruments.

Meanwhile, Yeokgok Library which is located in Bucheon, focuses on forest and environment. It offers visitors at least 21,000 books on nature alone.

Uijeongbu Art Library is South Korea’s first library that works as an art gallery as well. It was officially opened to public in December 2019.

In one of the episode of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020), the main characters Moon Gang-tae (Kim Soo-hyun), Sang-tae (Oh Jung-se) and Ko Mun-yeong (Seo Ye-jin) go to this library to research on children books.

4.Forest of Wisdom

What makes Forest of Wisdom an interesting place is that it is neither a library or bookshop.

Yes, it is home to over 200,000 books and has space for 100,000 more.

However, the books are not for sale or to be loaned out.

In fact, it is a place for people to read, have a cup of coffee, hold events such as classes and orchestra and film some Korean dramas.

There is a long list of K-dramas that were filmed here. The list include Record of Youth (2020), The World of the Married (2020), The King: Eternal Monarch (2020), She Was Pretty (2015), Search: WWW (2019) and many more.

Forest of Wisdom is located in Paju, a city dedicated especially for books.

5.Arc N Book

This unique cultural space is not just a bookstore but a lifestyle store.

Located in the basement of Buyong Eulji Building, Seoul, Arc N Book is famous for its ‘book tunnel’ display.

Imagine walking through a space with books above your head.

In the drama Start-Up (2020), it is where Seo Dal-mi (Bae Suzy) comes to pick up a book but ends up running into Nam Do-an (Nam Joo-hyuk) and his co-founders.

Other K-dramas that were filmed here were Run On (2020), Mother of Mine (2019) and Romance is a Bonus Book (2019).
