Panggung Rakyat: Public stage for Malaysia’s best cultural performances

CENDANA (Cultural Economy Development Agency) together with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) is proud to officially announce the launch of the latest traditional arts and cultural initiative – Panggung Rakyat.

Aimed to showcase and demonstrate to the rakyat the rich heritage and cultural values in Malaysia, Panggung Rakyat will be held on the third week of every month until the end of 2019 at the heart of Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Raja.

Panggung Rakyat is an immersive experience which serves as a public platform for the Rakyat to witness for themselves the beauty and dedication of the performing arts and artists.

This campaign aims to educate, energise and preserve Malaysia’s unique arts and cultural heritage through a series of specially curated traditional performances and interactive workshops.

The the participants will be able to experience a hands-on session on each art form and learn about how these beautiful cultural elements were weave into the rich and colourful fabric of history for Malaysia.

Makyong, the first showcase for Panggung Rakyat

Every journey begins with a first step, the first performance of Panggung Rakyat in the line-up also begins with one of the most historically important and authentic art forms to Malaysia – Makyong.

This ancient theatre form created by the Malay communities in Northwest Malaysia is a dance drama performance.

Besides, the dance is recognised by UNESCO as a Representative in the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Makyong is known as an art form that requires long years of rigorous training and is only passed through oral transmission.

With more than 400 years of history, the art is now on a serious decline.

Currently, there are less than 10 veteran Makyong performers in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Zamzuriah Zahari will direct the Makyong performance in Panggung Rakyat.

She is a locally and internationally renowned Makyong performer and a lecturer at The National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) Faculty of Dance.

CENDANA will be working together with local arts and cultural organisations such as PUSAKA and Nusantara Performing Arts Research Center (NusPARC) to bring authentic arts performances to Malaysians.

Panggung Rakyat will feature performances on a monthly basis held at Jalan Raja, 9:00pm to 11:00pm.

●17th August 2019: Makyong
●21st Sept 2019: Portuguese Dance
●19th October 2019: Ronggeng Dance
●16th November 2019: Kuda Kepang Dance
●21st December 2019: Bhangra Dance
